History

The Z.J. Carter Hardware Store building was built in  circa 1899 for Z.J. Carter and was one of the first brick constructed structures in the thriving railroad and farming community of Wallace, formerly Duplin Roads. It supplied critical supplies to farmers and their families. An additional building was added in the 1930s when Z.J.'s son, Newton, joined his father in the business. It would become know as Z.J. Carter & Son Hardware and go on to serve the town for years. The building themselves are on the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. National Park Service.
